Questions and Answers about 9-1-1

  What is 9-1-1?
9-1-1 is an emergency telephone number that will connect a caller to a trained professional who can quickly dispatch police, fire or emergency medical personnel.

When is it OK to dial 9-1-1?
Please dial 9-1-1 for emergencies only. For non-emergency calls to the Norwalk Police Department, please call (419) 668-3311.

What if you dial 9-1-1 by mistake?
Please do not hang up! If you do, a 9-1-1 operator will verify that address from which the call originated, and will send a police officer to that address to determine if a problem exists.

What if you dial 9-1-1 and hang up?
A 9-1-1 operator will get the call. The operator will first try to call back, and will probably send an officer to the address from which the call originated to determine if a problem exists.

Always remember that a 9-1-1 operator will often remain on the phone with you until help arrives.
