Norwalk City council approved the funding for a canine
unit to start working in 2002. Officer Dave Ditz was assigned as the canine
handler. Our canine, Fazo, is from Germany and was donated by the Norwalk
VFW. North Coast K-9, in Monroeville, OH, donated the training for the
dog. Fazo is certified by the North American Police Work Dog Association
and the Ohio Peace Officer Training
Commission in tracking and the detection of marijuana, cocaine, heroin and
methamphetamine. Fazo is also certified in general patrol duties,
obedience, building and area searches and apprehension work.
In 2006 both Officers Dave Ditz and Dave Pigman performed duties as the canine officer. Both handlers and Fazo conducted 30 narcotic searches, 19 tracks, 17 public demonstrations, 15 area and building searches and apprehension work. Fazo was used several times when subjects began to fight or act belligerently resulting in cooperative behavior of the suspects. Fazo aided in the apprehension and arrest of several suspects and located marijuana, heroin, and drug paraphernalia in numerous searches.
